View Full Version : Fuzziness of cutouts & text. Why?

Is there any way to increase the sharpness of cut out images?

I am new to Piranesi, and currently working through the tutorials. You can see some of my current WIPs by visiting my personal web site, http://www.DezignViz.com/, and looking through the Gallery section. I am really liking the product.

I notice however, that the cutouts all seem to have a haziness to them that I do not like. In the Gallery look at the House with the woman in front. Her own fuzziness seems to detract from rather than help the overall softness of the scene. Even in Tutorial 3: Photorealism when placing the text "Piranesi & Sons" the text is very muted. I could not see any way to control this. I would prefer the text to initially come in fairly sharp, and then soften up the entire image later with filters, etc.

Therefore, in summary:
- Is there any particular reason why the cutouts of people and all are so blurred?

- Can they be sharpened up a bit or would I need to do this myself?

- Is there a way to control the sharpness/fuzziness of applied text?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

John,

I'm afraid it's an artefact of the way we do the antialiasing (mip mapping) when we place the cutout. It's something we are currently looking at in development to see if we can improve it.

Brian,

Keep me posted as the development progresses towards improving this.

Just to confirm, does this artifact effect the placement of text as well, or are there other ways of controlling the sharpness of it?

Thanks,

John

John,

Hope fully we will have news soon on improvements in the sharpness of cutouts.

The same algorithm is used for text cutouts as well. However, you could try increasing the font size, via the "font..." button on the montage details tab. The font size does effect the resolution at which the text is rasterised.

I hope this makes sense.
