Question regading 'locking' in the vertical or horizontal

Hi guys, quite new to Piranesi [still playing with trial demo] and i have a question regarding the use of the mouse...
Can you lock the paint brush [or what ever tool you choose]in a direction to achieve a vertical or horizontal effect?

I've seen a few illustrations here that show this effect but I am unsure how this is achieved....

You just need to hold down the shift key as you paint.

Note you will need to look at the advanced properties of a brush to see which direction the brush is being constrained in.

Image for up and down in the image
Worldaxes, for X, Y or Z of epix file. This should be the model axes, but for some modellers such as Archicad this is not the case.
Fixed direction for a specified direction in the epix files axes.

Thanks Brian, I was trying 'Ctrl' and 'Atl' but didn't get to shift....
