Here is a Palm Tree Cutout that I generated from a Sketchup FIle.

I created a "new" file in Adobe...set the background to "transparent"

Opened the exported JPG...colored it and sketched it out in Pshop...then I selected the inverse and moved it into the "new" file I created earlier (with a transparent background)...so that I all I had was my new sketched image with color and an empty checkerboard background...then I cropped the image and saved a copy as PNG.

It casts shadows and everything...this seemed too easy...so, I'm probably doing it wrong...let me know what you think and if this is a good way of doing this.

Carlos;-)

Carlos,

Yes you are creating cutouts correctly. May I suggest that you could remove the "Crop" step.
1. Open the exported jpeg. Colour it up and sketch it out in PShop
2. With the magic wand, select the background inverse the selection. Copy to the clipboard.
3. Create a new file with a transparent background in PShop (Note. PShop creates a new file based on the selection extent in the clipboard)
4. Save the file as a png
